Uhh, no knitting today. Instead, a question: Why aren’t the price of plastics (including acrylic yarns) going up? Why are we still treating them as “cheap”? I mean, the price of gas is skyrocketing, so why isn’t the price of other plastics? Aren’t they all made of crude oil? So what’s keeping the idea that plastics are cheap, acrylic yarns are affordable, why aren’t we seeing spikes in those prices too?
Gah. More conspiracies.
How about a Discretionary Eating Challenge Update?
What? You didn’t know about this? Oh, that’s probably because I didn’t say anything about it, oops. I meant to, I swear!
I signed up for this challenge because I wanted to do something to push my limits. However, I signed up for 50% SOW, which means I am supposed to cut off half of my eating seconds without being hungry habits.
Hmmm.
How exactly does one measure that? Are you supposed to know your habits day-in day-out? I’m sorry but I just don’t practice that kind of mindful eating—I hate preparing food so much I refuse to acknowledge it sometimes. I’ve gone back down to eating only one egg in the morning instead of two, at least. But when do I eat seconds, and am I really not hungry when I do usually? I don’t know. For dinner every night? Do I have to be mindful every other day then? Is it okay if I don’t think about what I’m eating on the other 50% days?
Anyway, I’m not entirely sure I’m getting this challenge right. Still, at least I’m thinking more. (And munching on more cherry tomatoes than chocolate pieces. Yummmmm! Wish we’d gotten more of those.)
I have found, however, that it helps to put one serving of everything on my plate before I begin eating. That way I keep better track of how many servings of each thing I’m eating. And that’s the only tip I got for ya.
Next question: Why are Twitter and Plurk basically exactly the same? Knitters use Plurk, the green bloggers use Twitter, and Rebee also uses Twitter. Plurk is prettier, though. Which makes me wonder. Which one should I use?? This is why I don’t keep up with these new things…
Also, because Rebee asked, to Plurk users: can you turn off its timeline? Or is it something that’s just there? What parts of the layout are customizable??
I laughed at “More conspiracies.”
I read about the Discretionary Eating Challenge but decided not to do it because I’m vegetarian already and also very lazy. Plus I don’t want to give up sweets or caffeine. I have a drawer under my television set which is full of candy. Oh yes.
I also have a coffeemaker AND an espresso maker, plus I purchase 24 packs of energy drinks.
On second thought, maybe I SHOULD do the challenge …
I think SOW is more about just eating less. Like, don’t eat a ton at one sitting. Stop after awhile and decide if you need to eat more after thinking about it. So I think if you’re focusing on eating less on average, you’re fine? Maybe? Who’s going to judge, anyway?
There’s a such thing as Plurk?! I only joined Twitter because my Real Life Friend David Giesberg (http://davidgiesberg.com/, to plug him) is a Twitter maniac. At the time, I didn’t know anyone else that had this or anything else, so I just joined Twitter.
I don’t like Plurk’s timeline thing. Can you turn that off?
Let me see if I can explain the SOW a little better. It does require some body awareness. Pay attention to the physical signals your body gives you to tell you that it’s hungry. When you eat, pay attention to the signals it gives that you are full. Since it takes about 20 minutes for the brain to ‘recognize’ these signals, it is recommended to wait before loading up your plate a second time.
The idea is to eat enough good quality food to fuel your body but not to pig out just because the food tastes good. I’m sure you know what I mean on that last part – imagine sitting in a restaraunt where you’ve just had the most awesome meal. You’re stuffed but there’s a little food left on the table. There’s no way for you to take it home. So…you eat it.
Choosing 50% allows you a nice learning curve on this, Stephanie, with no guilt when you do overeat. Remember, too, that you can always eat a snack later; it’s not about starving yourself.
Does that help any?
I’m SOWing solo in utter ignorance of the challenge – between January and May I lost about 20 lbs. and I can’t believe how great I feel all the time!
Because the oil is more refined in gas. The way to make plastics doesn’t require it to be as refined or something like that.
I don’t do diets anymore. I do try not to eat a whole lot of food except every once in a while… like really good food I don’t get often mostly. Can’t blame me there. Good luck on it!
