Inspiration

(Hey! I have a finished cowl as of today [as in, today it's dry from blocking]! Hopefully tomorrow will have more light/time and I can get some decent pictures. Until then I’ll keep on knitting. I have socks and a sweater to work on!)

Rebee has “hinted” a few times that she would like a long cardigan. I get tons of requests for knitted items (does anyone else?), and I’ve had to tell people I won’t accept any more requests (although I tend to indulge when it’s from one of my close circle of friends/family). While this is still in the category of “maybe”, I’ve been toying with the idea.

It is a really neat idea to toy with, too. I don’t know what Rebee looks like (ahem. PHOTO SHOOT!), but I do know that it is in the 60s in the morning and in the 90s by mid-afternoon where she lives, and therefore as I joked to her, she really does need a nice long cardigan for the morning! (I mean, 60F is pretty cold! And 90F is pretty warm. What is wrong with her weather, I ask you?) But what does she wear?

To tell the truth, most I know about her is through her writing style and designs. I gather that she likes shades of purple and blue. Maybe a sky blue cardigan. Or a deep purple one. Or aubergine!

And what exactly counts as a “long cardigan”, I wonder? Does the Central Park Hoodie count? (I lust after that cardigan. Well, after knitting it. I’m not sure how much I’d wear it. But I definitely want to knit it.) Or maybe Basic Black is more her style? Or oooh, would a (lengthened) B-side Cardigan be closer to her style?

Maybe Rebee would find Rusty as delightful and wearable as I think it would be. Or maybe she could be my excuse for knitting Oblique—that’s certainly a long and cosy-looking cardigan!

And yet I’m not really counting the fact that I know that she likes more “vintage” clothes, but I don’t really know what that means. I don’t see her as a very high-fashion, Vogue Knitting person (neither am I!). But maybe she is (and in that case I can still find good patterns, I’m sure).

I think it’s still a neat brainstorming exercise, trying to figure out a cardigan pattern to fit to someone you know through that person’s writing and design. I’m all fired up. Oooh, Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece would be a good yarn for her. Not too warm or anything. See?!

What do you think? Does trying to figure out a pattern for someone whom you don’t know what she looks like inspire you?

I just realized I’m not getting your feed anymore. Stupid Bloglines!

Also, I looked at all those designs and they’re so nice! I just would want the sleeves to fit. I have the longest arms and legs in the world – I’m like a monkey giraffe. Okay, I need to post up some pictars.

You know, I’d never thought about picking a pattern for someone I’ve never met, but it does sounds kind of fun. Even knitting garments for people I know well involves a bit of uncertainty. How close were your educated style guesses?

All of those patterns are so nice – can’t wait to see what you pick!

I like the idea of tailoring a gift for someone I’ve never met…. a gift for their self more than their person. Lovely.

And Rebee’s description of herself as a monkey giraffe is one of the funniest things I’ve ever heard, and I hope I never see a picture of her, because my mental image is priceless.
